Defence Minister Khawaja Asif revealed on Friday that the results of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) meetings taking place in London will be presented before the coalition government, and in 48 hours the economic decisions taken by the government will be announced.
Addressing journalists in London, Khawaja Asif said “Until all our allies are on board, we will not be able to reach a final decision.”
The focus of the meetings, as per the defence minister, was the depreciating economic situation of the country. He said, "Imran Khan has caused destruction to the economy of Pakistan under the state patronage.”
Media reports suggest that the PML-N government is faced with the tough task of either increasing fuel prices, or calling early elections and passing on the baton to the interim government. It is being speculated that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif is against the idea of raising prices.
The defence minister dismissed the idea of the current government being under pressure to hold early elections. He added that if there was pressure, it could only be from the people of Pakistan, who were the "ultimate rulers" as per the Constitution.
He said that the damage that Imran Khan's government has done to the economy, as well as the corruption of his close associates needs to be addressed.
“We have inherited big baggage of the last four years which involved corruption of families, bureaucrats and politicians. There was an orgy of corruption under Imran Khan and the people of Pakistan are bearing the results of this corruption," the minister said.
He reiterated that PML-N cannot take decisions alone, as they were part of a coalition government, which includes many parties.
