Multiple officials deputed at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi have reportedly been detained for allegedly providing 'facilitation' to certain inmates of the prison.
Officials with knowledge of the development but who refused to be identified for this report said that Adiala Jail's Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Akram was detained for abusing his authority and access to unduly facilitate Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
The Punjab Inspector General of Prisons has been informed of the development.
Akram was reportedly detained and questioned by security agency officials over his alleged role in passing on secret messages to Imran. He was also reportedly whispering with Imran during his court appearance through a video link. If established, he could face departmental disciplinary action.
Apart from Akram, at least a second official deputed at Adiala Jail has been detained by security forces.
Officials detained Assistant Superintendent Bilal for questioning. They also accessed data on his cellular device.
Both Akram and Bilal had access to Imran Khan's special jail cell.
Imran Khan has spent a little over a year behind bars after his arrest in the Toshakhana case in August 2023. Initially, he spent several months in the Attock jail, but he was eventually moved to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
It is pertinent to mention here that the detentions of the Adiala jail officials comes days after the military announced they had arrested former ISI chief Lt Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed for post-retirement activities which violated the Army Act. Some claim that these activities included political meddling by Lt Gen Hameed, including regular contact with several members of the PTI.
