Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has decided to immediately remove District Police Officer (DPO) Nankana Sahib Asim Iftikhar from his post, in light of an inquiry report into the recent incident of a mob attacking a police station to deliver vigilante justice to a blasphemy accused.
The inquiry was conducted by a three-member committee, led by Addl IG Zulfiqar Hameed, with two DIGs also included in the team. The Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab received the inquiry report of the tragic incident that occurred in a police station in Nankana Sahib district.
As per details available so far, Nankana Sahib police had arrested 60 suspects involved in the brutal lynching of a man who was accused of blasphemy and detained in the police station. On Saturday morning, a charged mob overtook the police station, tortured the man and killed him.
According to the sources, action would also be taken against other responsible persons in the light of the inquiry report, and the caretaker chief minister has directed to use all available resources to complete the trial as soon as possible.
