In light of the recent Supreme Court detailed judgement regarding the former National Assembly deputy speaker's April 3 ruling, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has submitted a resolution petitioning the Senate to begin the impeachment proceedings against President Arif Alvi.
PML-N's Afnanullah Khan submitted the resolution, which in addition to the impeachment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Arif Alvi, also seeks proceedings under Article 6 of the Constitution against the president, former prime minister Imran Khan, former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri and former law minister Fawad Chaudhry.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had issued a detailed verdict, rejecting the plea of PTI seeking a judicial probe into the alleged ‘foreign conspiracy’ to topple the Imran Khan government.
Justice Mazahar Alam Khan Miankhel, in an additional note issued alongside the Supreme Court’s larger verdict had said that the ruling given by Suri on April 3, could be a violation of Article 6 (high treason).
Suo moto proceedings had been started by the top court after Suri had rejected the opposition’s no-confidence motion against Imran under Article 5 of the Constitution [loyalty to state and obedience to Constitution and law)] on April 3.
Following this the former prime minister Imran Khan had revealed in a televised address to the nation that he had instructed the president to dissolve the National Assembly.
However, the Supreme Court in an order on April 7 rejected the previous ruling and called the National Assembly into session for voting on the no-trust motion, which led to Imran’s ouster on the night of April 10.
