A powerful blast targeting worshipers inside a mosque rocked the Kandahar city of Afghanistan during Friday prayers. A spokesman for the Taliban government has confirmed the incident, saying that it resulted in heavy casualties. Initial reports suggest at least 16 people were killed in the attack, while several others received injuries.
Qari Saeed Khosat was quoted by Reuters as saying that the Taliban authorities were gathering details of the blast. Last Friday, a similar blast targeted a Shia mosque in the Kunduz city. More than 50 people were killed in last week's incident that was claimed by the Islamic State (IS).
Photos from the blast doing the rounds on social media showed several people injured in the attack.
