A man in Karachi has been sentenced by a local court to two months in prison after he was found guilty of sexually harassing a woman travelling in a rickshaw. The culprit, Muhammad Hamza, was arrested after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The verdict was issued by Judicial Magistrate Niaz Hussain Kandhro, who observed that the presence of the convict at the crime scene was established and Hamza had also not refuted the video of the incident.
The culprit was found guilty under two charges, section 294 (obscene acts and songs) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 354 (assaulting or using criminal force against a woman to outrage her modesty) of the PPC. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each for the two charges and ordered that Hamza would have to spend an additional week in prison in case of non-payment.
The incident took place in July this year on Sharea-e-Faisal. The complainant was on her way home when the convict, on a motorcycle, made obscene gestures and catcalled her. The complainant started recording the video of Hamza and his companions, on which the culprits fled. On returning home, the complainant uploaded the video on social media. Authorities took notice of the incident once the video started circulating on social media.
