Actor Tuba Anwar, the former wife of late televangelist Dr. Aamir Liaquat, has spoken up about how she was subjected to hate, online and offline, after tying the knot with the renowned TV host.
“I was getting into a relationship but I hadn't thought it out from a public perspective. I was young and naive at that time and didn’t have the right kind of exposure. I was not ready for all the chaos," Anwar said in an interview with The Kult.
According to the actor, she didn’t even announce the news, it was leaked. “We wanted to announce the news," she said adding that it should be a couple's decision to decide about when to tell people.
The marriage had sparked an online backlash, with many accusing the actor of marrying the scholar for fame.
“When it all started, I was baffled and couldn’t make sense of why people are hating me so much," she recalled.
"It became so worse that at one point, I started getting death threats and rape threats," she said adding she was also receiving abuse offline, by people associated to her.
But Anwar said that she had decided to remain firm and not pay heed to those who knew nothing about her.
"Everything I am today, I have worked hard for it and I won’t let people tell me otherwise,” she added.
Last month, the Federal Investigation Agency detained Dania Shah, the third wife of the late TV host.
Officials had said that Shah was taken into custody in Lodhran during a raid by the cybercrime wing of the agency.
It had occurred after late Liaquat’s daughter complained about a controversial video posted online. On the other hand, Shah’s mother Salma Bibi claimed that police personnel had barged into the house to handcuff her daughter to take her with them.
The MNA died in Karachi on June 9, 2022 under mysterious circumstances. The causes behind his demise could not be ascertained after a court ruled out an autopsy.
The demise came days after increasingly obscene images purportedly of the ex-TV host surfaced online, with many linking the two incidents.
