Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry announced on Wednesday that the party plans on taking legal action against the Jang Group in the United Kingdom and Dubai-based businessman Umar Farooq Zahoor in the United Arab Emirates for alleging that party chief Imran Khan had sold a state present to the latter.
This development follows an appearance by Umar Farooq on a private television channel owned by the Jang Group, where he had claimed that he had been sold a Graff gift set worth nearly $2 million that had been gifted to Imran Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman in 2018.
He had claimed that Imran Khan's wife's close aide Farah Khan had approached him, along with Imran Khan’s former Asset Recovery Unit head Mirza Shahzad Akbar regarding the sale of the watch set. He claimed Farah had wanted to sell the watch for $4-5 million but he 'negotiated' it down to $2 million, and made the payment in cash on the insistence of Farah
Denying that the watch had been sold to Zahoor, Fawad Chaudhry did acknowledge that the watch had been 'legally sold' in the 'market'. He said that at the time, public office holders could retain objects gifted to them by paying 20% of the evaluated price, and claimed that this is what Imran Khan had done, after which the gift set had become his personal property.
“Capital gains tax was paid for it accordingly and it was declared in Imran Khan’s returns as well as before the election commission," said Chaudhry, asserting that the watch was 'never sold to anyone named Umar Farooq Zahoor'.
The PTI leader also highlighted the 'shady history' of the Dubai-based businessman, who is apparently wanted byNorway, Switzerland, Turkiye and Pakistan since 2009-10 over various financial and other crimes.
PTI chairman Imran Khan also tweeted that he will be taking legal action.
