US Vice-President Lyndon Johnson shakes hands with a camel driver, Bashir Ahmad, during a folksy Texas-style tour of Karachi in 1961. The vice-president told Ahmad that President Ayub was coming to the United States for a visit later in the year and if he would like to come too. He got a quick affirmative reply, reported UPI Radio. And indeed, on October 19, Bashir Ahmad was sitting at the desk of Mr Johnson while on a visit to Washington. Mrs Johnson is photographed with him. Saeed Khan, a state department interpreter, is at the centre, according to AP.
