The Friday Times Editor Najam Sethi said on Friday that the establishment was set to implement its "Pindi Plan" and talks on this with both: the ruling coalition and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were underway.
Sethi made the comments while appearing in flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay. Implementing the plan, however, would be no mean feat, he said.
Sethi said PTI chairman Imran Khan had taken a very rigid stance. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he said, had been making brother Nawaz cognisant of developments. Nawaz, he said, was also in touch with the establishment.
The veteran journalist said Imran had demanded immediate elections to appoint the next army chief. The ruling coalition, on the other hand, is not ready to head into immediate general elections. The coalition, however, is willing to negotiate on the appointment of the next COAS.
Sethi had publicly unveiled what he termed the "Pindi Plan" earlier in September. The plan envisages assemblies being dissolved in October, 2022. General elections follow in early 2023. A stop-gap caretaker set-up, composed of both PTI and ruling coalition nominees, would appoint the next COAS in the interim period.
Flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay streams live at 9pm Monday-Friday.
