As uncertainty prevails over the fate of the election funds, the election activity is yet to gain momentum in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The political slugfest between PDM's government and apex court; episode of parliamentary ping-pong on the Supreme Court [Practice and Procedure] Bill, 2023, approving back-to-back three resolutions warning SC to avoid trespassing and unusual political happenings have further created mist in the political arena.
Moreover, the parliamentary body dealing with revenue and finance, in response to the apex court, has moved the issue of releasing Rs21 billion funds for the polls back to the federal government and the Parliament.
It would not be out of place to mention here that the Parliament has already plainly refused releasing funds for the elections due to economic constraints.
Unlike political hustle-bustle near the elections, the constituencies have yet not worn a festive look and even no traditional political Iftar parties have been observed in any of the rural or urban areas. The heavyweights of the major parties, too have not paid a single visit to the crucial constituencies.
Party tickets
Observing the unclear political panorama, the lobbyists in the major political factions are also seemingly disinterested in approaching the main leadership for awarding tickets to the aspirants. Only a final announcement of the political rivals in the constituencies would clear the uncertainty.
In the ranks of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, political experts reveal that Shah Mehmood Qureshi (Punjab), Pervaiz Khattak (KP) are expected to play an important role in awarding the tickets.
A large number of aspirants from upper Punjab are in contact with PTI President Pervaiz Elahi, and those who played an active role in the no-trust motion against former CM Hamza Shehbaz would easily get party tickets to contest the polls.
A tough contest is expected among the young workers of PTI from the same constituency who were prominent in public meetings and long marches, etc.
On the other hand, the romance between the PDM parties might not be seen in the upcoming elections as seat-adjustment is expected between JUI-F and PML-N only on a few seats. The involvement of the parliamentary board would also not be of much use, considering the rest of the elections.
The parties have yet to seriously think about awarding tickets.
Likewise, PPP and JUI-F are also a bit confused about initiating campaigns for the elections, as the main players closely watch uncertain situations in the country.
The main contest
Political gurus believe that the main contest in Punjab will be between the electable candidates of PTI and and PML-N. The role of PTI's dissidents will mainly be significant in the elections of National Assembly seats, as their political affiliations would define their future course of action.
They said that campaigning for general elections will gain momentum in the provinces only when a poll date has been finalised by the ECP.
Election talks
In order to take the country’s politics out of a blind alley, a religio-political party, JI, and PPP are active to initiate dialogue to convince PTI and the rest of the ruling clique.
Political and constitutional experts are of the view that a consensus seems to be developing on conducting the elections the same day.
It will be difficult for the ruling clique of PDM to accept all the conditions recently set by the PTI to start a dialogue.
PTI won't budge an inch from its 'demand' to not accept resignations of their MNAs and allow playing its parliamentary role in the National Assembly.
They will make all out effort to grab the slot of the leader of opposition in NA, said PTI's senior members, desiring not to be named.
