The Italian Ambassador to Pakistan, Marilina Armellin, met with Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, at the Supreme Court in Islamabad on Monday to discuss judicial cooperation and mutual legal reforms between the two nations.
During the meeting, Justice Afridi briefed Ambassador Armellin on Pakistan’s constitutional structure, emphasising the judiciary’s role in interpreting the law and maintaining balance between the three pillars of the state—Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary. The Italian envoy noted similarities between the judicial systems of both countries and underscored the potential for collaborative learning through judicial education and exchange programs.
One of the key topics of discussion was Pakistan’s upcoming judicial reforms, particularly the establishment of a “Commercial Litigation Corridor.” Chief Justice Afridi explained that the initiative aims to fast-track the resolution of trade and commercial disputes by setting up dedicated courts at the district level, as well as specialised benches in the High Courts and the Supreme Court. The reform is expected to improve contract enforcement, stabilise commercial litigation, and promote economic growth by ensuring swift dispute resolution.
Justice Afridi also informed the delegation that after the meeting, the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) would share its policy initiative matrix with development partners, inviting them to participate in judicial reforms under their respective programs. Ambassador Armellin praised the initiative, stating that an efficient commercial dispute resolution mechanism would boost investor confidence and revitalise Pakistan’s economy.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to enhancing judicial cooperation. Justice Afridi reiterated the judiciary’s dedication to transparency and public engagement in reforms, while Ambassador Armellin highlighted Italy’s interest in strengthening bilateral ties, particularly through the large Pakistani diaspora in Italy.
As a token of goodwill, Chief Justice Afridi presented a souvenir to Ambassador Armellin, who reciprocated with a memento, symbolising the enduring friendship between the two nations.
