During a rally in Mandi Bahauddin on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan took aim at opposition leaders, reiterating that his opponents are corrupt and had stashed enormous amounts of wealth overseas.
The prime minister further voiced regret at letting Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif leave the country, admitting that it was a 'major mistake'.
“I have a message for the Sharif family: The captain is ready for all your plans. You will not only face defeat, but all of you will go to jail,” the prime minister stated. He further claimed that the government had discovered 'multi-millions' in a bank account belonging to PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif's clerk, Maqsood Chaprasi which he said was suspicious as Maqsood was supposedly a low-level employee at Ramzan Sugar Mills.
The prime minister again stated that the opposition's urgency to oust him from office was due to their concern about facing money laundering and other corruption charges in court.
"If Shahbaz Sharif is innocent, then why is he running away from courts?" the prime minister asked the crowd.
The premier said that he would never grant the PML-N leadership or any member of the opposition a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), referring to the ordinance enforced by General (r) Pervez Musharraf which grants amnesty to politicians.
“Unless this money returns, I will continue to chase them,” the prime minister vowed.
The public rally in Mandi Bahauddin was the first in a 'mass-contact campaign' started by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government to reinvigorate the party's base. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said in a statement on Twitter that further such gatherings would be held across the four provinces.
