PPP’s Sadia Danish Elected As First Woman Deputy Speaker of GB Assembly
Sadia Danish of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been elected as the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly's first female deputy speaker.

After no member of the opposition submitted candidature papers for the post, she was chosen without opposition on Monday.

The ruling coalition, which consists of members of the PPP, PML-N, JUI-F, and forward bloc of the PTI, selected Sadia to be the eighth deputy speaker of the GB.

Sadia, a Gilgit native, was elected to the legislature in 2020 in a seat designated for women. From 2009 until 2014, she continued to be a participant on the PPP ticket.

She held the positions of tourism and information minister from 2009 to 2014 under the PPP government in the region.

The election for deputy speaker was to take place at the 22nd session of the GB Assembly, which Nazir Ahmed Advocate, the speaker, called on Monday.

Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, as well as representatives from the PPP, PML-N, JUI-F, and PTI's forward bloc, attended the session, which got underway at 5 o'clock.

The speaker appointed Sadia as deputy speaker after no candidate turned in their candidature papers by the deadline. Later on, he administered the oath of office to her.

After taking the oath, Sadia congratulated Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, assembly members, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari in a statement to the media.

When Benazir Bhutto was elected as the first female prime minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world, she said that the PPP had laid the foundation for women's emancipation.

She pledged to struggle for women's emancipation in GB.

With the election of Sadia, GB now has a new speaker, deputy speaker, and chief minister, all in the space of 39 days.

After Amjad Ali Zaidi was deposed as speaker by a vote of no confidence on June 8, Ahmed was chosen to take his place. Since that time, the deputy speaker's position has been vacant.

A week after PTI's Khalid Khurshid was disqualified in a case involving a fraudulent degree, Gulbar Khan was elected as the new chief minister of the region on Thursday.

PPP senior leader Senator Sherry Rehman congratulated Sadia Danish for becoming the first woman Deputy Speaker of the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly. He lauded the PPP leadership for promoting women in leadership positions.

While felicitating Sadia, Sherry hoped that the new deputy speaker would use her position as per Shaheed Benazir’s guidance and advocacy for the vulnerable and dispossessed.
