The government on Friday named Jameel Ahmad as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor.
“In exercise of powers conferred under Section 11(A)1 read with Section 14(1) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Act 1956, Mr. Jameel Ahmad is appointed as governor State Bank of Pakistan for a term of five years with the approval of the president of Pakistan, upon the recommendation of the federal government, with immediate effect,” a notification issued by the Finance Division stated.
The SBP had been functioning without a permanent governor for the last three months. Murtaza Syed was assigned the charge of the post after the end of the three-year term of Jameel’s predecessor, Reza Baqir, on May 4.
Jameel is a seasoned banker boasting over 31 years of experience. He has served as the SBP deputy governor from April 11, 2017 to October 15, 2018 before his reappointment as the deputy governor for a three-year term on October 25, 2018. He has also worked at the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA).
