The reports of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi quitting the party are baseless, sources close to the PML-N leader said on Thursday.
"He [Shahid Khaqan Abbasi] didn't leave the party when it was in trouble, why would he do so now, Hafiz Usman Abbasi, PML-N Punjab's vice president and a close aide to Abbasi, said.
Usman further said that many people sent him messages to know the result behind such media reports.
"All such reports circulating in the media are completely baseless," he said and added that he would have public refuted the piece if the news had been relayed by a credible journalist.
"What matters is a person's character and there's no doubt that Shahid Khaqan is a man of integrity and resilience," Usman maintained.
He further said that he wanted to convey to his associates as well, that there's no truth to the said claim, and that the PML-N leader will remain steadfast [to his commitment with the political party].
Meanwhile, sources told Naya Daur that Abbasi voices his concerns on any disagreement with the ruling party at liberty.
They added that during a recent meeting on the energy issues, Prime Minister Shehbaz, who was unwell at the time, asked the PML-N leader to conduct the question and answer session with the minsters and secretaries.
This, the sources said, goes on to show that Abbasi has complete support of the incumbent premier.
An earlier report said that the top PML-N leadership is uneasy at the new role granted to Maryam Nawaz.
The party stalwart, also a popular leader among the masses, was given the senior vice president and chief organiser portfolio on Jan 4.
PML-N sources said that the party was not taken into confidence on the said decision and that several members of the top cadre were uneasy about it.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior leader termed the decision non-democratic, saying it will only result in more control of the family on the party.
Another senior leader criticised the earlier appointment of PM Shehbaz’ son Hamza Shehbaz as Punjab’s chief minister, while Khawaja Saad Rafique and Malik Ahmed Khan were suitable candidates for the role.
Earlier today, Captain (retd) Safdar announced Maryam Nawaz' return to the country on January 29.
