Pakistan has briefed permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, on India's 'accidental' firing of a missile into Pakistan. After lodging formal protest, Pakistan has now called international attention to India's disregard for peace and stability in the region.
Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar said that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke directly to the UN Secretary-General and wrote a letter to the president and secretary-general of the UNSC on the matter.
The spokesperson said that Islamabad urged the UNSC to direct New Delhi to conduct a joint investigation and provide reassurance about the safety and security of its weapons, the Tribune reported. He also cited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership’s “increasing tendency of dragging Pakistan into its domestic affairs” and the party's “distortion of historical facts."
The Indian Ministry Of Defence admitted that it had 'accidentally' launched a missile into Pakistani airspace on March 9, claiming that the incident took place due to a ‘technical malfunction’. India had only acknowledged the purported mistake after Pakistan approached the Indian charge d’affaires in regards to the incident.
Director-General of ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar had publicly revealed that an Indian projectile and entered Pakistani airspace, falling near Mian Channu in Khanewal district, Punjab. The object damaged civilian properties when it crashed, but no causalities were reported.
