Najaf Hameed, the brother of former Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt General Faiz Hameed, was arrested on Monday outside a Rawalpindi Accountability court on charges of corruption.
Hameed, a tehsildar and revenue official employed by the government, appeared before an anti-corruption court in Rawalpindi on Monday for extending his bail in a case of corruption and bribery.
However, Judge Ali Nawaz Bhakar cancelled his bail. Subsequently, the anti-corruption department of Rawalpindi arrested Hameed from outside the jail and took him to the Chakwal on court orders.
Following his arrest, Hameed was presented before Judge Bhakar for hearing of his bail plea. But the court dismissed the petition.
Hameed escalated the matter, and his legal representatives filed another bail application before a senior civil judge. He is expected to be presented before the judge later.
As many as 18 people, including Hameed, were booked by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in April 2023 for allegedly bribing officials, misusing authority, making out-of-turn promotions, accumulating assets beyond means, and causing losses to the national exchequer. Apart from Hameed, most suspects are either absconding or on bail.
On February 13, he was suspended from his post of naib tehsildar in Chakwal on misconduct allegations. Meanwhile, the ACE wrote to the deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi and Chakwal seeking all records for the land owned by Hameed.
