Record Breached As Inflation Tops 42%
Owing to an increase in petrol and food prices, inflation measured through the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) increased 3.35 per cent during the week ended on August 18 and 42.31 per cent year-on-year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics’ (PBS) data revealed on Friday.

A rise of 38.63 per cent recorded over the week ending on August 5 earlier constituted the highest-ever yearly increase. Prices of 25 items, including vegetables, eggs, chicken and milk, increased during the week under review while the prices of 11 items, including vegetable ghee, mustard oil, and pulses, decreased, according to PBS data.  The prices of 15 items, moreover, remained stable.

The prices of following items increased during the week:

  • Tomatoes — 20.28%

  • Chicken — 7.57%

  • Onions — 2.30%

  • Powdered milk — 2.03%

  • Eggs — 1.63%

  • Electricity charges —6.83%

  • Petrol — 2.96%

  • Cigarette — 1.69%


The prices of following items decreased during the week:

  • Vegetable ghee —1.16%

  • Garlic — 0.94%

  • Mustard oil — 0.71%

  • Cooking oil — 0.31%

  • Sugar — 0.03%

  • LPG — 3.46%

  • Diesel — 0.18%
