British colonialism decimated indigenous systems of food production in South Asia, and replaced largely subsistence polyculture farming with cash cropping. The subsequent consolidation of land ownership by feudal lords and the subjugated marketization of the subcontinent's food system has given way to precarity that is likely to be exacerbated by the climate crisis.
