Ishaque Mangrio was born in Sanghar in 1955 and completed his matriculation and intermediate studies there. From a young age, he was deeply rooted in his community, becoming one of the most passionate political and literary activists of the 1980s, alongside hundreds of others all over Sindh.
In 1979, he travelled to Nagarparkar, where he met the remarkable Miskeen Jahan Khan Khoso, a social worker in Tharparkar who tirelessly advocated for the rights of the marginalised in Mirpur Khas during the 1970s. Ishaque's commitment to social justice only grew stronger after this meeting.
Ishaque's life was intertwined with history. He witnessed the inspiring activism of Anis Hashmi and Abid Hasan Manto in Sanghar, participating in their leftist movement. He organised enlightening lectures by Dr Mubarak Ali and Professor Faridudin, enriching the minds of many in Sanghar. His friendship with Khurshed Qiamkhani, who often visited Sanghar, was a testament to his deep and lasting connections.
In 1989, he attended the Faiz Aman Mela in Lahore, a gathering that symbolised his enduring commitment to progressive ideals. As a dedicated journalist, he contributed to various Sindhi newspapers, including Jago, Barsat, Kawish, and Sindh Express, and was an integral part of Sindh TV.
In recent months, Ishaque faced a battle with kidney problems. Despite being admitted to various hospitals, he did not survive, leaving us on 16 June 2024. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.
Ishaque Mangrio was not just a friend; he was a beacon of courage, compassion, and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire young journalists and activists. Though he has left us, his spirit and the impact of his work will forever remain in our hearts. He will always be remembered as a role model, a cherished friend, and a true champion of the peoples.
