Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairperson Lt General (retd) Muzammil Hussain resigned from his post on Saturday after serving more than five years at the organization.
Hussain was first appointed as Chairman WAPDA by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in August 2016, for a serving duration of five years. The following Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government then extended his appointment in 2021 for another five years.
However, according to a report by Geo, the retired General resigned on Saturday, saying he was doing so for 'personal reasons' and would 'talk in detail' after his resignation had been accepted.
He said that during his tenure he had worked on several important projects related to water resources, and had made WAPDA self-reliant. He added, “I have sent my resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Right now I can not share details for quitting."
Senior journalist Hassan Ayub claims that former prime minister Imran Khan gave Lt. Gen Muzammil an extension on his post as Chairman WAPDA on the insistence of former Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Gen Faiz Hameed, who also belonged to the same municipality as him.

Previously, during a visit to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam worksite last month, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had directed the WAPDA chairperson to accelerate the construction of the project to ensure completion by 2026 instead of the original project end date of 2029.
Speaking at the occasion, PM Shahbaz Sharif said "Nothing in this world is impossible therefore efforts to complete the Diamer-Bhasha dam project by 2026 instead of 2029 should be made."
