Locust swarm over Karachi (1961)
Young people turn out to catch locusts as a swarm darkens the sky over suburban Karachi in this picture taken on December 14, 1961.

"Deep fried, the locusts are considered delicacies in many Oriental countries," the original caption of the photograph says. "Despite warnings by the government that the locusts are being sprayed with poison, the boys can't resist the tasty snacks that fall like manna from heaven. The 50-mile long, 15 mile wide swarm destroyed every growing thing in its path, stripping trees and devouring every blade of grass along the way."
