National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has finally issued the production order for incarcerated MNA Ali Wazir, who has been in jail for more than 17 months over charges of 'hate speech'.
The order was issued during a National Assembly session yesterday (Tuesday), following which the NA additional secretary Muhammad Mushtaq sent the production order to prison authorities asking them to produce MNA Wazir 'at the commencement of each sitting of the National Assembly'.
It was also revealed that on Tuesday, the incarcerated MNA had been shifted to a hospital for a check-up.
His lawyer Qadir Khan told Dawn that the MNA was moved to a hospital for a ‘routine’ check-up.
According to PTM Spokesperson Sher Mehsud, Wazir had been taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he would undergo some tests today (Wednesday).
Ali Wazir was arrested on December 16, 2020 in Peshawar on account of allegedly making anti-state speeches against the Pakistani state. He was brought to Karachi and subsequently jailed in the Karachi Central Jail since December 31, 2020.
He was released on parole to take part in the no-confidence vote held against former prime minister Imran Khan on April 10th, and was escorted by police for the occasion.
Wazir had been granted bail in two out of three of the cases against him, and the final bail hearing was supposed to take place on May 12. However, it was announced that the hearing had been adjourned till May 18, due to the absence of the Karachi Anti-Terrorism Court judge.
The most recent case against him was registered by Karachi’s Boat Basin police station in 2018, and according to sources, the FIR appears to have been sealed off.
