Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif could be arrested on arrival to Pakistan if he does not secure a transit bail.
The law minister made these remarks during a press conference on Tuesday, where he revealed that if Nawaz Sharif manages to get transit bail, then he cannot be arrested or held when he comes back to the country. He added that ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto had also secured transit bail when she came back.
Tarar, who is also from the PML-N, stated that if Nawaz failed to secure a transit bail, then he would have to surrender himself. “The courts should provide relief to the people who are handing themselves over to the law voluntarily," he added.
Islamabad High Court’s Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for the PML-N supremo in 2020, after he had failed to return to Pakistan from the UK, after his medical bail had expired.
Nawaz Sharif had been allowed by the Lahore High Court in November 2019 to go to the UK to seek medical treatment, which is where he has been residing ever since.
While rumors about Sharif's return to Pakistan have always floated around, they were heightened when the PML-N led coalition government took charge.
During the press conference he also talked about Musharraf's probable return, saying that the law will take its course and 'he will be facilitated in line with the rules and regulations'.
