Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that the interim setup had a limited term in office and was tasked with supporting and overseeing the country's electoral process.
In advance of the premier's first visit to Karachi, the comments were made on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting in Islamabad. The caretaker government will do its utmost to keep an eye on daily operations while keeping the primary mission in mind, he added.
PM Kakar informed his cabinet members that their tenure in the administration was only legal under the terms of the constitution.
The prime minister stated, "We are not here to construct the government model or structure. He insisted that since the caretaker setup was a continuation of the last government, the overall policy was meant to continue until and unless there were any infractions of the law or official business.
Although the Senate was still in place and could still pass laws, Kakar stated that the National Assembly (NA) had resigned and that everyone was now waiting for new elections.
The agenda of the following cabinet meeting will be based on the work plan that the acting prime minister's cabinet members will develop after receiving briefings from their respective ministries.
Kakar, who only a day before visited Jaranwala, termed the protection of minorities the topmost priority. He apprised the cabinet of his visit and categorically stated that fanning religious hatred and extremism would not be allowed at any cost. He assured that exemplary punishment would be awarded to those involved in the Jaranwala incident.
The meeting recommended organizing a national-level interfaith harmony conference next week. Scholars of different religions and schools of thought would be invited to the conference.
