The federal government on Sunday approved the deployment of Frontier Constabulary (FC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in response to the state's request for enhanced security.
The development occurred after AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq met with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Islamabad.
During the meeting, the two discussed the law and order situation, as well as the current political environment and the AJK government's budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
According to reports, the FC would not only support the AJK police but additionally provide foolproof protection for the Neelum-Jhelum, Mangla, and Gulpur hydropower projects.
The sources stated that up to six FC platoons will be deployed in the AJK for three months.
Speaking at the event, Naqvi informed the AJK Prime Minister that all feasible help would be offered to maintain peace and enhance the security situation in the region.
Last month, AJK experienced violent rallies that resulted in many fatalities, including that of a police officer, and scores of others were injured during the four-day protests over inflation and high electricity rates.
The demonstrations and deteriorating law-and-order situation prompted the AJK government to deploy Rangers to calm the situation in the valley.
Furthermore, the FC's deployment comes a day after the federal government announced the commencement of Operation "Azm-e-Istehkam," a countrywide counter-terrorism initiative aimed at increasing pressure on extremists threatening Pakistan.
