A Karachi-Amman connection (1968)
tft-37d-sPresident Ayub Khan attending the wedding of Crown Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and Sarvath Ikramullah of Pakistan, which took place on August 28, 1968 in Karachi. Sarvath Ikramullah is the daughter of diplomat Mohammed Ikramullah, and politician, diplomat and Urdu author, Begum Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah. The prince’s brother, King Hussein of Jordan, and President Ayub signed as witnesses on the marriage document, AP reported. According to Sarvath’s brother-in-law Rehman Sobhan writing in his book Untranquil Recollections: The Years of Fulfillment, Hassan and her had known each other from childhood, when Sarvath’s father was Pakistan’s high commissioner in London. “During that period, Begum Ikramullah had invited Hassan, then a young student at prep school in England, to come over and have tea with her children at the High Commissioner’s residence at 56 Avenue Road, Swiss Cottage. During a State visit by Hussein to Pakistan in 1968, Hassan remembered this kindness and paid a courtesy call on Begum Ikramullah, where he met Sarvath, now a beautiful and vibrant 20-year-old, who was preparing to attend Cambridge University later that year. King Hussein invited Sarvath and her mother to visit Amman, and the rest, as they say, is history.” The commemorative stamp is from the collection of Jamshaid Qureshi.
