Ever since their return, the Taliban in Afghanistan have imposed limitations of women. These have included curbing their access to public places, limiting their rights to economic independence, preventing access to education and imposing the rule that women should not leave home without a male relative and without a face covering.
Afghan women have been putting up a resistance by protesting and now are finding ways to counter the impositions and curbs by opening up a library in Kabul on Wednesday.
There is hope that the library will act as a means of increasing access to education and enabling them to have access to public life.
As per a report by Reuters https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/afghan-women-open-library-counter-growing-isolation-2022-08-24/ the library has more than 1,000 books which vary from fiction and non-fiction and cover a variety of topics including politics, economics and science. An Afghan women's rights organisation the Crystal Bayat Foundation received books as donations from teachers, poets and authors.
