Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Asad Umar was ordered to be released immediately by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which also ruled that his detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Act was invalid.
Umar was also ordered by the court to file an undertaking promising not to take part in violent protests.
PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also ordered to be released by the IHC on Tuesday after he provided an assurance stating that he would refrain from instigating strikes and generating unrest.
However, shortly after leaving Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, he was once again taken into custody.
On May 10, a day after unrest broke out amid nationwide rallies against the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Umar was brought into custody from the IHC grounds under the MPO. Within 24 hours of the start of the violent demonstrations, a number of other prominent PTI leaders had also been apprehended in Islamabad.
Umar was instructed today by IHC Justice Mian Gul Hassan to "forget" his political future in case he deviates from the undertaking. The court also directed the PTI leader to delete two tweets.
