Karachi residents had been protesting against high electricity bills and power cuts of late.
Angry protestors showed up at the K-Electric Korangi office on Thursday and ransacked. In between complaints, some burned tyres which resulted in traffic being disrupted. Nazimabad residents also staged a demonstration outside the K-Electric office.
In another instance, residents of Shah Latif Town blocked the National Highway. They later dispersed following the submission of a memorandum before utility officials.
A policeman and several civilians were injured in violent clashes between law enforcement agencies and protestors who had taken to the street against persistent loadshedding in Karachi’s Mauripur area in June. People exasperated by prolonged power outages in hot and humid weather had taken to the streets in Teen Hatti, Saddar Preedy Street, Jubilee Market, Shah Faisal Colony, Surjani Town, University Road, MT Khan Road, Nishtar Road, and 14 other areas of the metropolis earlier.
The police and protesters could not reach an agreement despite the passage of more than 24 hours and the traffic on a route that connects to the city’s port was still blocked. However, the police arrested four protesters and used water cannons to disperse them.
