Is The UN A Tool Of Western Powers?
It is considered that Pakistanis are more critical of their state, society and establishment than, for example, Indians are of their state and establishment. Pakistanis are considered to be hyper critical of every symbol of power in their existence. Yet, there has been little criticism of the way the United Nations (UN) and its various agencies work as a direct “tool” of the imperialist agendas of the western powers (US, UK, and others) both globally as well in Pakistan.

Therefore, here, I intend to deconstruct the whole “sanctimonious” veneers around the way the UN system and its various agencies work to hoodwink both the global public as well as a large majority of Pakistani citizens; as if they are aiming to do something worthwhile -- and that is pure deception.

I am sure the ordinary people living in the US and Europe are as decent human beings as anyone living in Pakistan or India or any other part of the world. I am sure ordinary people living in the US, UK, and Europe do not want to harm anyone else like all decent people whether living in Pakistan or India or anywhere else in the world.
And the UN system housed in New York, Geneva, and other places is an “active” partner is presenting the soft image of the western powers through its useless and most ineffective and bloated international bureaucracy.

However, the deep states in the US, UK, Europe, and all English-speaking countries (including Canada, Australia, New Zealand) are deeply racist and violent and they have been under the veneer of “democracy” and “human rights”, and want to destroy the very body politic of the Muslim countries in particular and non-White population of the world in general. The UN system is there to sugarcoat exactly that imperialist violence and destruction, and present the so-called “humanitarian” face of the western powers to the world that is designed to soften the imperialist blow for the rest of the world.

The deep states of the western powers pursue destruction of the Muslim countries in particular and non-White population in general through imperial wars, imperial proxy wars and their decades old deep collaboration with the powerful local interlocutors in these Muslim and non-White countries. And the UN system instead of preventing the western powers from their violent and destructive agendas for rest of the world; aids them by presenting a false impression as if the western world cares about the humanitarian norms that it does not at all.

Any keen observer of the international politics would recall how the deep states of the US, UK, and Europe destroyed Iran in the 1950s, and again in the late 1970s (got most of the progressives killed in Iran); even going further back, they ended Khilafat in Turkey during the World War One; imposed a really retrogressive royal family in an important oil-based Middle Eastern country; encouraged the Iraq-Iran war in 1980s; again pushed Saddam to attacked Kuwait in early 1990s that led to the first Gulf War; lied about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction to impose another deadly war in Iraq after the 9/11; in the recent past, destroyed Syria to stone age; murdered Gaddafi under the leadership of Obama and let the extremist forces take hold of Libya; have used the Saudi Arabia-Iran rivalry to spread violence and hatred and death and destruction in rest of the Muslim world; have been getting the Palestinians persecuted by Israelis; brought the already poor and backward Yemen to the point of extinction through starvation by selling billions of dollars of weapons to its opponent country; have played a crucial role in fighting both proxy and direct wars over Afghanistan that has brought nothing but death and destruction to Afghans for over four decades; made Turkey to degenerate and move away from its secular and multicultural fabric constructed under Ataturk; have imposed an army-backed regime in Egypt; and the list goes on.

In short, these deep states of the US, UK, Europe and other English-speaking countries want multiculturalism, diversity, knowledge, progress, science, culture, art, music, theatre, opera, allowing dissent and difference of opinion, great universities, great books and everything that is good in the world for their own countries only. And for rest of the world, particularly the Muslim world, they want the most backward forms of religion to be imposed to destroy their even organic and centuries-old multiculturalism, diversity, knowledge and tolerance.
The UN in Pakistan has done virtually nothing to stop the severe human rights violations and forced abductions and murders in Balochistan for more than a decade. Similarly, on other issues of democracy, women rights, institution-building, development, and growth; the UN only pays lip service and does not bring any worthwhile change in the structures of the state and society.

As Ayesha Khan, feminist scholar, based in Karachi, wrote in her book on Islam and feminism some years ago that the western powers on one hand strengthened the most retrogressive Ziaul Haq dictatorship in Pakistan for more than a decade from 1977 to 1988 that socially reengineered the whole socio-political and economic fabric of Pakistan, and on other hand, also provided some window-dressing funding through its western donors to apparently promote progressive causes, including women rights.

The UN system belongs to those “window-dressing” western donors, as it is mostly funded by the western powers. So, it is high time that Pakistanis criticize the UN system both globally as well as in Pakistan, as much as we look down upon other oppressive symbols of global, national, and local power centres.
