Former attorney general and distinguished jurist Irfan Qadir has been reappointed as the special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on accountability.
Qadir was first selected as the SAPM for Premier Shehbaz Sharif in September of last year, but he resigned on March 29 after testifying as the lawyer for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) before the Supreme Court.
Due to his reputation for his tenacious advocacy against corruption and corrupt practices, Qadir would oversee matters relating to accountability after receiving his most recent appointment.
According to a notification of his appointment, he would have the same benefits as a state minister and work out of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
In the past, Qadir held the positions of prosecutor general for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), attorney general of Pakistan, and judge on the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Sources said that Qadir's legal advice would be of utmost importance in the cases against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and that his appointment at this time is seen as a significant development in light of the cases currently pending before the NAB and accountability courts against Khan.
