Journalist Azaz Syed said on Monday that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) heavyweight Ishaq Dar's return was representative of party supremo Nawaz Sharif's lack of confidence in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's team.
Syed made the comments while speaking in flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay. The journalist said a lot of hopes were being pinned on a single person. He said this was akin to the high hopes people had from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan. Dar's performance would have a direct impact on the results of the following general elections, he said.
Journalist Nadia Naqi said Khan's demand of immediate general elections would lose traction if Dar managed to turn the economy around. She also questioned if Khan had procured an audio of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif from the dark web in connection with his boast of leaking another recording featuring her.
Economist Aqdas Afzal said inflation posed the greatest threat to Pakistan's economy. He said curbing the slide of the rupee against the dollar would prove a formidable challenge for Dar. He said tasking a chartered accountant with the aforementioned and managing foreign exchange was a stellar strategy. Dar, Afzal said, shared a great rapport with the state bank governor too.
He said former finance minister Miftah Ismail had essayed a crucial role in bringing the country back from the brink of bankruptcy. Afzal said Miftah's services merited a state award.
Flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay broadcasts Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
