The government has summoned the Punjab Rangers to maintain law and order in the province, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed announced on Wednesday amid the ongoing protests staged by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Rasheed said Pakistan was facing a lot of pressure and wanted to establish peace in the country.
The minister said that the ambassador of France was not present in the country and that the TLP seemed to have some other agenda.
“I have warned the supporters of the proscribed organisation to return home,” Rasheed said, adding that if the international community banned its activities, then the government of Pakistan would intervene.
Earlier the same day, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said, “TLP is not a religious organisation, it is a militant wing.”
The minister said the cabinet had decided to deal with TLP like a militant organisation.
“TLP cannot blackmail the state; it has no status. We have defeated terrorist organisations in the past,” he said.
