Smog-Choked Lahore Extends Winter Vacations By One Week
The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered a seven-day extension in ongoing winter vacations across educational institutions in Lahore due to unrelenting smog. Justice Shahid Karim issued the order on Tuesday.

Earlier on 14 December, the Punjab School Education Department had announced winter vacations for public and private schools across the province from 24th to 31st December.

Last week, the LHC directed authorities to propose to the school education department to implement a two-week-long winter vacation as a step to help curb smog in Lahore. The court had previously ordered the closure of schools on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hearing public interest petitions regarding different environmental issues on Tuesday, Justice Shahid Karim observed that vacations in schools and colleges ought to be extended due to the prevalent smog.

The judge also summoned the director general of the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to the next hearing, which will be held on 6 January.

The LHC also directed the Punjab government to impose a smog emergency, and call a meeting to take appropriate precautionary measures to control the air pollution.
