A New Zealand Member Parliament (MP) Julie Anne Genter on Sunday cycled to a hospital, while in labour, where she gave birth an hour later.
“Big News!” Genter wrote in a Facebook post a few hours later. “At 3.04 am this morning we welcomed the newest member of our family. I genuinely wasn’t planning to cycle in labour, but it did end up happening”.
She added, “My contractions weren’t that bad when we left at 2 am to go to the hospital – though they were 2-3 min apart and picking up in intensity by the time we arrived 10 minutes later”.
New Zealand's local media reported that Genter had also biked to the hospital to give birth to her firstborn back in 2018. At the time Genter had written in a Facebook post, “Beautiful Sunday morning for a bike ride, to the hospital, for an induction to finally have this baby”, along with a picture of riding a bike in her 42nd week of pregnancy.
Earlier in 2018, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden had taken a six-week maternity leave while in office after she became only the second world leader, after former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, to give birth while in office. Later she also earned praise by bringing her three-month-old to a UN meeting as she was still breastfeeding.
