This impressive view of Lahore was taken from the Shish Mahal of Lahore Fort. Rising over the landscape and dominating the scene is the Badshahi Mosque, its imposing gateway facing the marble pavilion in the Hazuri Bagh just visible on the left. In the foreground and assortment of artillery lies in one corner of the Shish Mahal’s marble court. Overlooking the graceful curved roof of the Naulakha pavilion nearby is Ranjit Singh’s tomb.
This photograph was captured by Samuel Bourne who was in Lahore for several months before leaving in March 1864. He intended to write about the city for the British Journal of Photography, but circumstances prevented this. He took more than twelve photographs of Lahore, of which this is one.
