Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a committee to investigate Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan’s 'confession' about the participants of his long march carrying weapons during the protest last week.
The five-member committee comprising Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Law Minister Nazir Tarar, Advisor on Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) Affairs Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ayaz Sadiq and Asad Mahmood will probe the matter.
Earlier on Monday, Imran Khan said that he was certain that there would be firing during his party’s long march held last week, adding that the participants of the march had weapons.
He went on to say that he decided to call off the march fearing violence, as the arrests of PTI workers and leaders had caused widespread anger among the protestors. He expressed these views while talking to anchor Moeed Pirzada on his show.
The former PM also said that the protestors who had been at the receiving end of shelling and 'heavy-handed' tactics of the police were likely to retaliate, which is why he had to change his original plan and discontinue the protest in the capital.
Chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a meeting of the federal cabinet held earlier today (Tuesday) discussed the PTI's protest held on May 25.
According to a report by Express Tribune, the cabinet took notice of the PTI chairperson's statement that protestors at his long march were armed.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah reportedly told the cabinet that the protest that PTI held was not a political activity, but a 'conspiracy against the state'. The PTI's alleged exploitation of resources from the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) also came under discussion during the cabinet meeting.
