Former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Asad Durrani has recommended handing over power to PTI chairman Imran Khan, in wake of the Punjab election verdict by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
In the article titled 'koi umeed bar nahi aati, koi soorat nazar aati' (roughly translating to: it looks bad and it's likely to get worse), Durrani explains the scenario where PM Shehbaz's 'surrender' would resolve the issues facing the country.
In his analysis of the former general's shocking suggestion, senior journalist and analyst Kamran Yousaf said that Durrani is of the opinion that the PDM cannot win the elections in any circumstances now.
In this context, Yousaf added, he opines that the premier should formally invite Imran to take the helm.
"He also suggests that while the premier does this, he should make an announcement that he is doing so in Pakistan's best interest as it was the only solution amidst an intensifying crisis.
Yousaf quoted the former general as saying that it is unlikely that Imran will be thankful to the premier for his magnanimity, but that it will definitely be Shehbaz's "masterstroke".
To substantiate his point, Durrani sheds light on the state of the economy, the divided society, and a new wave of terrorism, amidst an intense judicial crisis.
'Also, contrary to the perception that the army has returned to the barracks, no one is willing to believe that they have actually parted ways with politics.'
Earlier today, the Supreme Court declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision regarding the postponement of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa till October as null and void.
A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and including Justices Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Munib Akhtar, announced the decision.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court deemed the election body’s decision to hold elections on October 8 “unconstitutional” and mandated that they take place on May 14 in Punjab.
