The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has won the positions of chairman tehsil councils in Mathra, Havelian, and Abbottabad in the Peshawar local government by-election following the arrest of its chief Imran Khan last week.
Inam Ullah of the PTI received 20,333 votes, according to the provisional aggregated result from all 155 voting locations in Mathra. This position became vacant following the passing of JUI-F tehsil chairman Farid Ullah.
However, the Jamiat Ulema-i Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), led by Maulana Fazl ur Rehman, was unsuccessful in the aforementioned constituencies. Its candidate, Rafiullah, received 13,564 votes but was unable to win the position of chairman of the Mathra tehsil council.
Iftikhar Ahmed of the Jamat-e-Islami received 9,546 votes, followed by Aziz Ghaffar of the ANP (2,721), Ali Abbas of the PPP (5,377), and Fazlullah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) (3,351).
55,607 voters participated in the election, keeping the turnout at 26%.
There have been rumors that a fight delayed the Havelian tehsil council's decision. However, subsequent results from 134 voting places in Havelian showed that independent candidate Uzair Sher Khan had won the election with 21,464 votes. Talha Asif of the PML-N earned 14,892 votes, while Iftikhar Khan of the PTI garnered 18,521 votes.
By-elections in two tehsil councils were held with extraordinary security precautions. Senior police officials claimed that in order to ensure a calm election, large police contingents were stationed at voting places and throughout the two seats. Ashfaq Anwar, the city police chief, and other officials went to many voting places to look at the security measures in place for the elections.
In Mathra, 155 voting stations were set up by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Up to 84 of these voting places were designated as extremely sensitive and 57 as sensitive.
In Tehsil Council Havelian, an additional 134 polling places with 392 voting booths were set up for 165,800 voters. Of them, 25 were designated as sensitive, while 40 were designated as the most sensitive. In Havelian, the three main candidates were independent Uzair Sher Khan, PTI's Iftikhar Khan, and PML-N's Talha Asif.
