A lawyer gunned down a female law student and critically injured her brother in the Naseem Nagar area of Hyderabad on Thursday. He later turned his gun on himself.

Yusra Pathan and her brother Akash Pathan were returning home from university on the latter's motorcycle when a man, identified as Irshad Khokhar, intercepted them near Wadu Wah with his car.

Khokhar fired at the bother sister duo with his 9mm pistol and then turned to shoot himself.

Onlookers rushed to the site and shifted the dead and injured to the Civil Hospital in Hyderabad. Doctors at the hospital declared Yusra dead on arrival, while Khokhar died during treatment.

Doctors described Akash's condition as critical.

Officials at the Civil Hospital said all three had gunshot wounds and had suffered excessive bleeding.

Police said that Khokhar was a lawyer, and he allegedly used to pursue Yusra, a law student. However, she had rebuffed his advances. Due to Yusra's refusal, Khokhar is believed to have taken the extreme step.

Officials added that Yusra and her brother Akash studied at the Institute of Law in Hyderabad, which is affiliated with the Sindh University in Jamshoro.

The police said they are still investigating the matter and hope to uncover additional details about the victims and the assailant and their connection.

As news of the fatal attack spread, students at the institute expressed their shock and grief. One student reportedly fainted upon hearing the news.

Meanwhile, the institute has decided to postpone exams scheduled for March 8 and 9, citing security reasons.
