The registration of three vehicles in former premier Nawaz Sharif's name by unidentified men with the intent to conduct serious crimes, including possibly terrorism, is under investigation by the City of London Police, reported Geo News on Sunday.
According to the police, the probe was launched after Nawaz's London office informed them that three different vehicles were registered in the former prime minister’s name and that criminal activity was planned.
March and April saw the registration of these automobiles. Nawaz's office received notice from the Driver and Vehicles Licencing Agency (DVLA) that "Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif" had been registered as the car owner with the number BF06NWC. The DVLA informed the London Police as well.
When Nawaz's office informed the agency in March that it was a fraud and that not only was his name incorrectly written, the DVLA officer responded, "Given the information you have provided, we will investigate the matter further, and we will write to you as soon as those investigations are finished."
In April, a second car with the license plate MM07MUB was registered in Nawaz's name. The DVLA and the police were also informed of this.
Nawaz received the following response from the DVLA on April 6: "Thank you for returning the papers supplied to you for the vehicle mentioned above. I'm sorry you were contacted in this manner. Your name and address were mentioned on the application form that was given to us, for some reason, according to my review of the file. Your information has now been deleted from the vehicle record. You should, therefore, keep in touch with the police regarding the fraud allegation."
Transport for London (TfL) issued a penalty charge notice in Nawaz Sharif's name on April 11 against the third vehicle with the registration number LY63XDL, with the location of the violation being close to Buckingham Palace. It is believed that Nawaz's office contacted TfL and the police about the most recent scam attempt.
NFRC230305856682 and NFRC230405863595 were received by the City of London Police on March 30 and April 3, respectively, according to Pauline Smith, director of Action Fraud at the department.
She said, "They have been recorded on our system as information reports. An information report can be made when fraud has not been committed but has been attempted or there is suspicion of criminal intent. An information report is also made if somebody is reporting fraud on behalf of a victim or if a person is the victim of identity theft."
Khurram Butt, who has dealt with police-related matters, told the police that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters are the prime suspects in this fraud.
