The Swat police have arrested a 70-year-old man who allegedly married a 13-year-old girl in the Barikot tehsil of the district.
Police have also arrested the girl's father for assenting to the underage marriage.
Both suspects are in custody, and further investigations are underway.
Lower Swat SP Ghulam Sadiq Khan told The Friday Times that the 70-year-old man, identified as Hanifa, had allegedly contracted marriage with 13-year-old Saira* a few days ago, after the consent of her parents.
As soon as word about the alleged marriage spread, the police took swift action and stopped the marriage.
SP Ghulam said that the girl's father and the groom have been arrested, and a case has been lodged against them under the Child Protection Act and Child Marriage Act.
The officer told The Friday Times that the victim has been presented before a medical board, and further investigations are underway.
Once the investigation is complete, the officer said action will be taken against the nikkahkhwan (marriage officiant) and witnesses as well.
