Helpful Wassan


According to Daily Dunya (16 April 2018), the PPP’s Manzoor Wassan advised the Sharif brothers that if they wished to perform Umrah, they ought to hurry up, because they have to go to jail too (uskay baad unhein jail bhee jana hai). He was quoted addressing Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif in Sindhi, saying “Marsoon marsoon tekoon mein jail chadeesoon”. Further, he promised to drop them off at jail personally.


Change cometh


Daily Dunya (16 April 2018) quoted Saudi religious scholar Abdullah al-Mutlaq as issuing his religious opinion that women need exercise just like men, especially during pregnancy. Therefore, reversing earlier policies in the Kingdom, it was now considered acceptable for women to exercise outside, in parks and streets.


Of elected politicians and the angels


According to Daily Jang (16 April 2018), Saad Rafique of the PML-N opined that the ouster of Nawaz Sharif had harmed Imran Khan’s interests too, and that this would become evident in the elections. He went on to state that in Pakistan, elected leaders were called thieves and dragged around. He asked whether the opponents wanted a government of angels (malaika).


Erdogan's Syria


Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted by Daily Dunya (17 April 2018) as saying that nobody else but the Turks had an interest in the future of the Syrian people. He went on to emphasise that nobody could take any steps in Syria without Turkey being on board.


Backlash


It was reported by Daily Dunya (19 April 2018) that Dr. Haya Al-Awad, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister for Girls’ Education, sparked outrage in the Kingdom after she appeared at an international seminar without the niqab.


Appeal to a higher power


The PML-N’s Saad Rafique, according to Daily Dunya (20 April 2018), commented on what he considered a sinister campaign of character assassination aimed at him. He warned those involved to fear God’s wrath, saying that they could bother him as much as they wanted, but that God was watching (jitna sataana hai sataa lo, khuda dekh raha hai).

Daily Express (20 April 2018) reported that the PTI representatives accused of selling their votes in the Senate elections were responding to the allegations from the party leadership. Two of them, reportedly, swore on the sacred book that they had done nothing wrong, while others said they would go to court.


Painful


The Ameer of Tanzeem-e-Islami, Hafiz Akif, was quoted by Daily Express (21 April 2018) as saying that he was alarmed by the imposition of Western culture in Saudi Arabia under the guise of open-mindedness (roshan-khyaali). He further stated that scenes of indecency (fahashi) and immodesty (be-hayai) would prove very painful (takleef-de) to Muslims.


Better times?


According to Daily Jang (21 April 2018), Nawaz Sharif expressed his feeling of being singled out for unfair treatment during the ongoing drive for accountability. He stated that this had not happened even in periods of dictatorship.


On "Mujhe kyoon nikala?"


PTI chief Imran Khan, according to Daily Express (22 April 2018), expressed his opinion that people in Pakistan know just why Nawaz Sharif was removed, and his complaints were simply meant to confuse people.


Who is it?


Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was quoted by Daily Jang (22 April 2018) as asking Imran Khan to name the person who had ordered him to vote for Zardari. He went on to say that the PML-N took its orders from the people (awam), whereas other parties took their orders from above (ooper se).
