A wave of fear has gripped Thatta on Wednesday after the bullet-riddled body of a police constable was found floating in a water channel located near the famous Jeelani House of Thatta. Police recovered an official rifle lying beside the body, that was allocated to the deceased constable by the department. The deceased constable, identified as Amjad Ali Gandhro, was initially posted at Keenjhar police station, from where he was transferred to police station Makli and later deployed at Jeelani House for security surveillance.
The body was immediately sent to Civil Hospital Thatta for autopsy. It was disclosed through post-mortem examination that the deceased received three bullet wounds: two in the back and one in the chest. All bullets were fired from his own service rifle. Besides that, the deceased bore marks of violence on different parts of the body.
Thatta police expressed suspicion of a well-planned murder of the police constable on Tuesday night. SSP Thatta Adeel Chandio, after visiting the crime scene, expressed grief at the mysterious murder of a member of police personnel, and said that a multidimensional, fair and transparent investigation would be launched into the incident.
Based on the initial post-mortem report, police said that the evidence indicated it was a “barbaric murder.” After the coroner’s office completed formalities, the body was handed over to the relatives and later buried with full police honours.
The funeral prayers of the deceased police constable were attended by SSP Thatta Adeel Chandio and other key officials of the police department. Later on, a large number of people belonging to the Gandhro clan staged a protest in Thatta and demanded justice for the slain policeman.
