Intervened On General Elections But Failed, President Alvi Says
President Arif Alvi said on Saturday that he had tried to broker an understanding on general elections in vain.

Alvi made the comments while speaking to journalists in Lahore. He said he had tried to facilitate negotiations on the conduct of general elections but had failed. The president said the prevailing political situation had left him anguished. The negotiations, he said, had come to naught.

He said the Constitution did not envisage consultations on the appointment of the army chief.  If, however, this was done it did not amount to anything major, he said.

Alvi said he did not work in line with counsel from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan. Khan, Alvi said, was an old friend who he considered his leader. He said efforts were underway to reconcile the PTI supremo with the establishment.
