Don't Use The Term 'Foreign Funding' For PTI's Case, Chief Election Commissioner Tells ECP
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja has directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) not to list Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s case pertaining to prohibited funding as the 'foreign funding' case.

Akbar Babar, a founding member of the PTI, had claimed in his petition that the party had received $7.3 million in funding from foreign donors and accused party chairman Imran Khan of submitting fake certificates to the commission.

During the hearing of the case today, PTI's lawyer Anwer Mansoor raised an objection over the case being listed as "foreign funding" in the cause list and said that "the case involves prohibited funding but the cause-list mentions it as 'foreign funding case."

At this, the CEC told the lawyer that his client also refers to the case as “foreign funding case”. He, however, accepted the lawyer’s request and ordered against referring to the case as "foreign funding case".

In January, the ECP scrutiny committee had submitted a report indicating that the PTI leadership had violated funding laws by collecting millions of dollars in foreign funding without properly detailing its source.

The report had stated that the PTI had provided "false information" regarding the party's funding to the ECP. It had said that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)’s bank statement has revealed that the party has received Rs1.64 billion in funding.
