Babar Azam Quits As Pakistan Cricket Team Captain In All Three Formats

Pakistan National Cricket Team captain Babar Azam on Wednesday announced his decision to step down as the skipper in all three formats of the game.

"Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats," he wrote in a simple message on his official social media accounts.

Babar stated it was a "difficult decision" but felt it was the "right time for this call".

He noted that he was appointed as captain of the national team by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2019, and in the past four years, he has experienced many highs and lows, on and off the field.

"I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world," he said.

With Pakistan rising to the top spot in the limited 50 overs cricket format during his captaincy, Babar credited it to the collective efforts of the players, coaches and management. He sincerely thanked the PCB for entrusting him with this significant responsibility.

"I'd like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey," he stated.

Even though he was stepping down as captain, the 29-year-old said that he would continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats of the game.

"I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication," he stated.

Babar Azam had been under pressure to resign after Pakistan crashed out of the ongoing Cricket World Cup in India. Pakistan finished the tournament fifth, having won only four of its nine matches, losing the remaining five. Pakistan had gone into the tournament as among the top-rated sides in the world of cricket.
