May 9 Riots: Sheikh Rashid Arrested In Rawalpindi

Awami Muslim League (AML) Chairman and former interior minister Sheikh Rashid was arrested outside the courtroom after a Rawalpindi local court rejected his bail in a case relating to the May 9 riots.

Rashid faces charges for destruction at Rawalpindi's Metro bus station on Sixth Road.

The former interior minister is being taken to the New Town Police Station.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi granted bail to the politician and others charged in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case. The case against the accused was filed at the A.R. Bazaar Police Station.

In a separate development, the court granted bail to Sheikh Rashid and other nominated persons in a case involving the May 9 riots, which erupted across the country following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in a corruption case.

The hearing on the riot-related cases was postponed until January 25.

Prior to this development, Sheikh Rashid and other accused had obtained interim bail in nine of thirteen cases from the anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi.
